On the edge of silence
I had worn hearing aids for only a few days when something happened that stopped me in my tracks.
I was sitting quietly with a cup of tea when I suddenly noticed the sound of the rain against the window. Not just the rain itself, but every little tap and patter. I sat there listening, almost in disbelief.
Then I heard the birds outside.
I had known they were there, of course. I had seen them singing in the garden many times. But now, for the first time in years, I could actually hear them clearly.
Later that day, someone laughed in the next room. It was such an ordinary sound, yet it brought tears to my eyes.
Then suddenly the realisation his me, I hadn’t simply been missing sounds. I had been missing little pieces of everyday life — the quiet conversations, the birdsong, the rustle of leaves, the laughter of people I loved.
The world hadn’t suddenly become noisier, it had come alive.
And for the first time, I understood just how much I had been missing without even realising it.
